Getting Ready To Celebrate The Golden Gate Bridge's 75th Anniversary
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) --- Next May 27th is the 75th anniversary of San Francisco's iconic Golden Gate Bridge, and people are gearing up to celebrate.
Spokeswoman Mary Currie said there will be a 3,500-square-foot pavilion on the southeast side of the bridge that will have lots of information about the 1.2-mile long suspension span.
"We don't have a lot of interpretation going on here at the Golden Gate Bridge in terms of educating people about the engineering and science of the bridge," she said. "So it will be an opportunity to have a gateway, a welcoming location, and a place for information."
KCBS' Tim Ryan Reports:
San Francisco Giants President Larry Baer, a celebration co-chair, has many fond memories of the bridge.
"In high school, if I was stressed out over a chemistry test or a girlfriend or something, I would go and take a look at the bridge with the dogs, and it would be a bit of a relief to me just to see the bridge," he said.
Bridge officials are now seeking donors to foot the bill for the commemoration of the beloved landmark.
Unlike the 50th celebration, there will be no traffic closure as there was when about 800,000 people walked across the bridge.
