Gerard Butler Surf Film Prompts San Mateo Street Closures
SAN MATEO (CBS SF) - Some streets were closed and parking was restricted in parts of San Mateo on Wednesday, while a film crew shoots a movie about the surf break at Mavericks, according to San Mateo Police Department.
Scenes for "Of Men & Mavericks," starring Gerard Butler (300), Elizabeth Shue (Leaving Las Vegas), and Johnny Weston, are being filmed from October-November at various locations in San Mateo and Santa Cruz counties.
According to the SMPD, filming in downtown San Mateo prompted closures to through traffic and restricted street parking on Hacienda Street between 31st and 26th Avenues. The closures are scheduled to begin at around 10:00am and continue through 6:00pm.
During the afternoon, filming impacted traffic and parking in portions of San Mateo's business district near 25th Avenue, which were closed between El Camino Real and Flores Street. Various alleys adjacent to 25th Avenue were off limits, according to police. Closures in the area will be in effect until early morning.
Businesses and residents in both neighborhoods have been notified about the closures, and police are working with the film's producers to minimize impacts on people who live and work in the area.
Based on the inspirational true story of surfing icon Jay Moriarty, "Of Men and Mavericks" tells the story of a young man's quest to surf Northern California's most dangerous wave, and the local legend who takes him under his wing. What begins as a mentorship turns into a unique lifelong bond, as the two unlikely friends discover that there is nothing more powerful than pushing your limits and chasing a nearly impossible dream.
"Of Men and Mavericks" will be in theaters October 26, 2012.
