Gay Rights Supporters March In San Francisco For Equality
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) _ Gay rights supporters gathered across the country on Sunday to call attention to their continuing fight for marriage equality.
That included a small crowd that marched across the Golden Gate Bridge, the seventh year that Marriage Equality USA has held such a march.
Molly McKay said a similar march was held across the Brooklyn Bridge.
"Unfortunately, we haven't moved forward like we thought we would at the federal level," she said. "So we have to continue to put a human face to the issue and remind people that everyday that goes forward is denying justice."
Stewart Gaffney and his partner have been together 23 years and have been involved in the battle almost from the beginning.
"We're standing up for ourselves and we're standing up for our families," he said. "While it takes energy to walk the walk, we wouldn't have it any other way. It's the best way to honor our wedding vows, to be together for better or for worse."
Chauncey Killens was also on the bridge, holding a sign that said "marriage is between a man and a woman."
"You can marry an Eskimo. There isn't going to be a problem or issue," he said. "As long as it's between male and female, it's cool."
The 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals will hold a hearing in December on whether to uphold a federal ruling that struck down Proposition 8, the measure that banned same-sex marriage.
