Gas Pipeline Under Alamo's Iron Trail Raises Safety Concerns
ALAMO (CBS) -- Property owners who have built fences and other structures along Contra Costa County's Iron Horse Trail have officials worried. That's because there is a high-pressure jet fuel petroleum pipeline that runs under it.
In 2004, that same pipeline exploded in Walnut Creek after a backhoe punctured it. The explosion killed 5 workers and injured 4 others.
If certain lawmakers have their way, homeowners may be required to pay an annual fee and provide additional insurance. Homeowners told CBS 5 they see no cause for concern.
County officials say the encroachments may be considered on a case-by-case basis but new construction of things like bridges, steps, pavers and fences will not be allowed under any circumstances.
