GameDay: Harbaugh, Cain Shine At AT&T Pro-Am
PEBBLE BEACH (KPIX 5) - Greetings from Pebble Beach and the AT&T Pro-Am. Going from the Super Bowl to a PGA tour stop is like going from Mardi Gras to Tombstone. For those who say Tiger Woods' participation doesn't matter I've got a half-empty press room to show you.
Still, it's one of the most famous tournaments of the year for its picturesque beauty, star-studded field and world-famous golf courses.
I walked a few holes with 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh Wednesday who might have skipped the event had he not committed to play it. He was a class act in the aftermath of the Super Bowl defeat and admitted that he still hasn't spoken with his victorious brother. He busted out of the green side bunker on 18 before calmly sinking his putt for par much to the delight of the gallery which he rewarded by signing autographs for everyone who asked.
Giants pitcher Matt Cain, playing in Harbaugh's group, sank 30 foot putt on 17. No surprise for Mr. Perfect who just might be the best amateur in the field.
Hunter Mahan was tied for the lead with Russell Knox at 6-under and told me after he was fortunate to play Pebble in such tame conditions. Phil Mickelson has 'em right where he wants 'em at one-under. My prediction is Lee Westwood who fired a 68 at Pebble. He loves the courses, loves the format and just seems to bask in the fun and frivolity of it all.
See you on TV.
