Alex Smith Nearing New 3-Year Deal With 49ers
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5) – San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith said reports of his demand for a five-year contract are "completely false," and that he's happy with the three-year deal offered by the 49ers.
Smith told CBS 5's Kim Coyle Sunday his agent and the 49ers were working out the details and he expects to sign a new contract with San Francisco.
"It's going," Smith said. "They know I want to be back. I think they want me back. It's just a matter of working out the details...I'm just waiting for it to get done.
Coyle said her conversation with Smith gave her the impression that the quarterback could sign a deal before hitting the free agent market Tuesday. Smith said San Francisco is his home and he is looking forward to playing here for a long time.
2011 was easily Smith's most successful pro season, as the team complied a 13-3 record, won NFC West title, and hosted the NFC Championship Game.
Head Coach Jim Harbaugh has said he wants Smith back for 2012, even though the team selected quarterback-of-the-future Colin Kaepernick in the second round of the 2011 draft. Smith finished the season with 3,144 passing yards, 17 touchdowns, 5 interceptions.
