Funky-Smelling Silicon Valley Tap Water Caused By Delta Algae Bloom
SAN JOSE (KCBS) -- Water officials in Silicon Valley are warning residents that the water coming out of their taps may be smelly and dirty, but it's still safe to drink.
"Some people might notice a dirt-like smell or taste in their tap water, and that is because of a bloom of algae called Geosmin," Colleen Valles with the Santa Clara Valley Water District said.
The algae bloom in the Sacramento San Joaquin Delta called Geosmin, which can produce an earthy smell and taste.
Drinking the water cold can reduce the flavor and smell of the compound.
The Water District had already switched its source from the Delta to the San Louis River until the problem is resolved.
