Friends Gather To Remember Woman Gunned Down In Sacramento Strip Mall
SACRAMENTO (AP) -- About 1,000 people gathered at a Sacramento church to remember a woman who died while shielding her 2-year-old son from gunfire during a shootout at a strip mall.
During Monique Nelson's funeral on Thursday, the 30-year-old woman's brother read from an ominous letter she had written in July about what to do in the event of her death.
Richard Nelson read that his sister had instructed family members to send her son, Jayden, to a private school and take him to church. She also wanted Jayden to always keep a big picture of the two of them beside his bed.
Monique Nelson was one of two people killed during the Dec. 14 gunbattle at a barbershop. Police say she was hit by a stray bullet. Five others were injured.
Authorities have arrested one man in the shooting.
