Fremont Man Suspected Of Driving Bank Robbery Getaway Car

UNION CITY (CBS/BCN) -- Officers have arrested the suspected driver of a getaway vehicle in an attempted bank robbery in Union City on Saturday, police said.

Anthony Lee Pabros, a 36-year-old Fremont man, was arrested just after a suspect riding in the vehicle opened fire on a pursuing officer, Union City police said.

Just before 12:45 p.m., police responded to a call from a customer inside the Bank of the West at 33301 Alvarado Niles Rd. The caller reported that a man, wearing dark clothing and a mask, was robbing the bank.

Police then received a second call from an alarm company, who told police that the suspect was still in the bank and armed with a firearm.

An officer arriving on the scene saw the suspect flee in a vehicle and began chasing the car.

Police said that Pabros was driving the vehicle, which was later identified by witnesses as being involved in the attempted robbery.

The suspect exited from the passenger side of the vehicle near the intersection of Arizona Street and Dowe Avenue, and began firing a handgun at the officer, police said.

The officer returned fire, but police are still investigating whether the suspect was struck in the exchange.

While Pabros remained in the vehicle, police said that the suspect ran into the rear yard of a residence in the 2700 block of Dowe Avenue.

Police arrested Pabros and found the other suspect dead in the backyard of a neighboring home. It does not appear that the suspect had any connection to the house, according to police.

Officers located the deceased suspect with at least one gunshot wound to the head, lying near a firearm.

The suspect's identity is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin, the Alameda County Coroner's Office said.

The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave, which police said is consistent with this type of investigation.

The Alameda County District Attorney's Office is monitoring the investigation and, according to police, the FBI and members of the Alameda County Sheriff's Office crime scene investigators assisted Union City police in processing the area for evidence.
