Fremont Lawmaker Authors Bill On Child Death Reporting
FREMONT (KCBS) - A Fremont assemblyman has co-authored a bill to make it a felony for parents to not promptly report the death or disappearance of their child.
More than a dozen states are now considering similar proposals in response to the death of two-year-old Caylee Anthony in Florida.
Casey Anthony was acquitted or murder in connection with the death of her daughter Caylee.
Anthony waited more than a month to report her daughter missing, but that is not a crime because Florida had no mandatory reporting law. Neither does California.
KCBS' Chris Filippi Reports:
"It's one of these holes that occur," Fremont Assemblyman Bob Wieckowski said. His bill would require parents to report the death or disappearance of a child under the age of 14 within 24 hours.
"You should have that obligation as a guardian to report the death of a child," he said.
A similar bill has also been introduced by three other California assemblymembers.
