Road Rage Leads To Freeway Shooting On I-880 Near San Leandro

SAN LEANDRO (CBS SF) -- A driver is in critical condition after a road rage incident led to a shooting on Interstate 880 in San Leandro early Monday morning.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the shooting took place around 2:30 a.m. on 880 at Lewelling Boulevard in San Leandro.

CHP said a white vehicle pulled up to another vehicle and opened fire. The driver of that vehicle was taken to the hospital with a head wound and was in critical condition. Three other people inside the vehicle were not physically injured.

There was no description immediately available of the shooter's vehicle.

"Right now, we don't have much to go off of. What we have been told is that is was a white sedan, but that's all we have," said CHP spokesperson Joe Fowler. "We don't know how many people were inside, we don't know who was inside."

The shooting and investigation led to the closure of all southbound lanes of Interstate 880 at Lewelling for much of the morning commute. Authorities reopened the southbound lanes around 9:00 a.m.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the CHP.

"Even if you think it was minor, it could be major to us," Fowler said.
