Fatal Police Shooting Shuts Down NB Hwy 101 In San Mateo For 6 Hours
SAN MATEO (CBS SF) -- The California Highway Patrol reports all lanes of northbound Highway 101 have reopened following an officer-involved shooting Friday in San Mateo.
The roadway was reopened around midnight, according to the CHP.
Officers were called to the scene on northbound Highway 101 near Highway 92 on reports of an accident involving two cars just after 5:30 p.m. but, when they arrived, an armed suspect got out of a vehicle and opened fire.
Three CHP officers who responded to the scene engaged with the armed man. All three fired their weapons, killing him, police said.
No CHP officers were injured in the shooting, according to CHP Officer Art Montiel.
"The San Mateo police department will be handling the investigation" into the shooting," Officer Montiel said.
The incident caused a severe traffic alert on northbound Highway 101, initially shutting down all lanes.
The incident caused the closure of the northbound lanes of the highway for more than six hours.
