Former NUMMI Workers To Get $2 Million For Retraining
FREMONT (CBS/AP) - Alameda County has approved an additional $2 million to train former workers at the New United Motor Manufacturing plant for other jobs.
The county's board of supervisors has given the okay to the funding. The money comes from roughly $10 million in federal and state grants the county received last year to help retrain the workers and provide them with employment resources.
The additional funding will go to Oakland Private Industry Council, which had previously been awarded a $4 million contract for educational services and training programs for the workers.
The NUMMI plant, a joint venture between Toyota and General Motors, closed in April. More than 4,500 employees were laid off.
County officials say more than 3,500 of them have received job assistance.
