Former High School Coach Facing Richmond Rape Charges

RICHMOND (CBS SF) - A former high school sports coach was set to be arraigned in Contra Costa County Superior Court in Richmond Wednesday for alleged sex crimes against youths in the 1980s and 1990s, authorities said.

Barron Edwards, 51, was charged Tuesday with 12 counts of lewd acts against a child under 14 years old, one count of lewd acts against a child between 14 and 15, and three counts of forcible rape, according to the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office.

Edwards, who at one time worked as a football and basketball coach at Kennedy High School in Richmond, was arrested at his San Lorenzo home last Thursday afternoon, sheriff's spokesman Jimmy Lee said.

He was booked into county jail in Martinez, where he was being held on $2.5 million bail, Lee said.

Senior Deputy District Attorney Nancy Georgiou said the charges involve multiple victims, but declined to say how many.

Any other potential victims of Edwards or anyone with more information about the case is asked to call the sheriff's office at (925) 313-2621.
