Former Giants President Hosts GOP Fundraiser In San Francisco
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) — Former San Francisco Giants President Peter Magowan hosted a sold out private fundraiser for the Republican Party in the city's Pacific Heights neighborhood Monday night.
Sen. Lindsey Graham from South Carolina is one of the featured guests at the event, where dinner plates will run from $2,600 to $5,200.
The fundraiser comes as polls show growing disapproval of Republicans in Congress as the government shutdown drags on. Graham was supposed to be joined by Arizona Senator John McCain, but McCain is said to be staying in Washington to try and re-open the government.
David McCuan, a professor of political science at Sonoma State, said McCain and Graham are seen as the moderates in the GOP who are trying to recapture the spotlight away from the Tea Party movement.
"One thing that these two folks are trying to do is to increase the seriousness and relative strength of Republicans in the Senate. The Senate is very much in play for next year and Republicans are hoping to pick up a few seats. Even though they come to liberal San Francisco, what they're trying to do is go far and wide across the country to raise money and raise the visibility of those folks who can change direction," he said.
Graham is spending several days in the Bay Area and Los Angeles raising money for what is expected to be a tough re-election battle next year. The fundraiser is scheduled at 7 p.m.
