Former Danville Scout Leader Indicted On Federal Child Porn Charges
DANVILLE (AP) -- A former Danville Cub Scout leader arrested on suspicion of possessing child pornography will have to stand trial in federal court.
The Contra Costa Times reports that Michael Vawter was arrested by FBI agents at the Walnut Creek courthouse Thursday morning just before he was due to appear for a hearing on similar charges.
The 40-year-old Vawter was taken into custody after being indicted on possession of child pornography by a federal grand jury earlier this week.
San Ramon Police Sgt. Mike Boehrer told the newspaper that it is not uncommon for federal prosecutors to take over the prosecution of child pornography cases.
Vawter was first arrested at his office in San Ramon earlier this year after police received a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children's cyber tip line.
It was not known if Vawter was represented by legal counsel.
