Flurry Of New Bay Area Highway And Transit Projects Set To Begin
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) - The state is up against a deadline to spend several billion dollars in bond money, meaning 19 transit-related projects are moving full steam ahead in the Bay Area right now.
Voters approved $20 billion in statewide bonds in 2006, and now $5 billion of it is being put to work.
"Thank the voters of the Bay Area," John Goodwin with the Metropolitan Transportation Commission. "There's a requirement that these projects be underway by the end of 2012, so we're seeing a real push right now."

In all, 19 Bay Area transit-related projects are being funded with this cash - including the addition of carpool lanes on I-880 between San Jose and Milpitas, and San Leandro to Oakland. Merging lanes will soon be added on Highway 1 in Santa Cruz, and on 101 between Palo Alto and Mountain View.
Changes are also planned for interchanges on I-280/880 near Valley Fair in San Jose, I-580 in Livermore, and Highway 4 in Contra Costa County.
Ultimately, Goodwin believes there's some good news here for every commuter.
"It's the project that's going to make your life easier, it's going to be the most exciting," he reasoned.
