Fleeing Driver Crashes Into Mountain View Creek
MOUNTAIN VIEW (CBS SF) -- A 25-year-old woman who allegedly drove away during a traffic stop and crashed into a creek early Thursday morning in Mountain View was arrested, police said.
Officers had stopped Tiffany Smith in a black Honda Accord around 2:15 a.m. for speeding and reckless driving near northbound U.S. Highway 101 and state Highway 85, police said.
Smith initially complied with the stop by pulling over, but sped away to northbound Highway 101 as an officer spoke to her, according to police.
Officers didn't chase the woman out of concern for public safety and looked for the Honda, which was last seen in the area of San Antonio Road and Highway 101, police said.
Two officers saw the car within minutes behind a commercial building on Terminal Boulevard, where Smith allegedly sped away again, according to police.
Smith drove into a fence, crashed down a tree that was knocked down and went down an embankment. The car then flipped over before it landed in a creek, according to police.
The 25-year-old woman was transported to a hospital to be treated for moderate injuries from the crash, police said.
Once Smith is released she will be booked into Santa Clara County Jail on suspicion of fleeing from a police officer, speeding, obstructing a police officer and driving without a license
