Fisherman Drowns After Chasing Ice Chest Hit By Waves At Point Reyes
MARIN COUNTY (CBS SF) - A fisherman died off the coast of Marin County Monday afternoon, after apparently being swept into the water at Elephant Rock north of Point Reyes.
A Coast Guard spokesman said the man was fishing with a partner who stepped away for a few minutes, only to return around 12:30 p.m. to find the other man had disappeared.
According to a statement from the National Park Service, a wave hit the fisherman's ice chest and dragged it out into the ocean. The man then went after the ice chest and was overcome by waves.
A Sonoma County rescue helicopter recovered the man's body shortly thereafter, according to the park service. He was pronounced dead at the scene
There were initial reports that a vessel may have been swept out to sea that turned out to be incorrect.
