First Responders Busy With 2 Separate San Francisco Traffic Incidents; Cyclist Hit By Car Has Life-Threatening Injuries

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)— A bicyclist who was struck by a car in San Francisco's Mission District Monday afternoon has been transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to a fire spokeswoman.

First responders were busy dealing with two separate traffic incidents that happened around the same time, one of which sent a bicyclist away in an ambulance after colliding with a car.

The first incident involved a car that struck a pedestrian near the corner of 17th and Diamond Streets in the city's Castro neighborhood. The second incident involved a car and a bicyclist at 14th and Folsom Streets.

The bicycle collision was reported at 12:35 p.m. according to San Francisco police spokeswoman Officer Grace Gatpandan. CPR was administered to the cyclist before being taken away.

Gatpandan said the bicyclist was bleeding when emergency crews arrived and that the four-door sedan involved in the collision remained at the scene.

KCBS' Margie Shafer arrived at the scene of the cyclist accident and spoke to a witness who said they saw a 4-door white Honda Civic was headed north on Folsom and ran a red light as the cyclist turned left onto Folsom.

The cyclist, an older gentleman with gray hair, was said to be wearing a helmet. His glasses remained at the scene.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
