Firefighters Rescue Hiker After Falling From Cliff At Alum Rock Park

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- San Jose firefighters have reached an injured hiker who fell off a  cliff in Alum Rock Park Tuesday morning, a fire department dispatcher said.

Units responded to reports of a person who had fallen near Eagle Rock Peak off of Penitencia Creek Road at about 10:25 a.m., the dispatcher said.

The female victim in her 30s, fell around 30 to 40 feet in rocky terrain, she said.

More than 40 firefighters and emergency medical crews worked for two hours to rescue her. A Lifeline medical helicopter was dispatched to the scene as well.

San Jose Fire Department's Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) unit used ropes to access her and then provided advanced life support at the exact location where the hiker landed.

San Jose's fire captain said the woman was lucky to be alive. The helicopter transported her to Regional Medical Center.

Information about the victim's condition was not immediately
available.
