Firefighters Battle Wildfire Near Sunol
SUNOL (CBS / AP) -- Fire officials said a brush fire burning in an unincorporated area of Alameda County is 85 percent contained.
CalFire Battalion Chief Jim Crawford said the fire has consumed about 300 acres since it was reported about 3 p.m. Friday in a remote area south of Sunol.
Earlier on Friday more than 200 firefighters and three helicopters were battling the blaze, Crawford said.
After spreading quickly through a rugged grasslands area shortly after it broke out, Crawford said the blaze is no longer making any forward progress. Crews are expected to have the fire contained some time during the night.
As of Friday night, the number of firefighters was down to about 50 and Crawford said crews will most likely remain on scene throughout the night.
"Things are going very well," Crawford said.
Multiple agencies responded to the blaze Friday afternoon, including Alameda County, East Bay Regional Parks, Fremont and Livermore-Pleasanton fire departments.
No structures are threatened by the blaze. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
