Two Wildfires In Lake County At 50 Percent Containment
CLEARLAKE (CBS) – Firefighters in Clearlake acted quickly Friday afternoon to bring two wildfires that initially caused some evacuations to 50 percent containment, according to authorities.
According to a CalFire tweet at 2:45 p.m., the so-called Extension Fire in Lake County was burning off of Dam Road and Dam Road Extension.
The Lake County News said that the Extension fire was first reported at 1:15 p.m. in the area behind Woodland Community College and Walmart.
The Clearlake Police Department told the Lake County News that all residences along 18th Avenue were under immediate evacuation just before 1:45 p.m. The newspaper reported that the area of Dam Road at the Cache Creek Apartments to 20th Avenue added to the evacuation area at 2:30 p.m.
The Lake County Sheriff's Department also reported a second fire in the area of Ogulin Canyon Road and Industrial Avenue. A reverse 911 message was sent to the residents on Ogulin Canyon advising of non-mandatory, but recommended evacuations.
A temporary shelter was set up at the Clearlake Community Center at 3245 Bowers Lane.
By 4:45 p.m., the Extension Fire was still at about 10 acres with crews bringing it to 50 percent containment. Evacuations in the area were lifted.
Meanwhile, the second fire in Clearlake Oaks grew to 15 acres but was also 50 percent contained.
Lake County was scorched by a series of fires last summer that began almost exactly a year ago to the day with the Rocky Fire, which burned nearly 70,000 acres between July 29 and August 13, 2015. The two largest fires -- the Jerusalem Fire and the Valley Fire -- consumed over 100,000 acres before finally being contained.
