BART Service Resumes After Fire On Tracks Near El Cerrito Del Norte Station

BERKELEY (CBS SF) -- BART service has resumed on the Richmond line Wednesday afternoon between the North Berkeley and El Cerrito del Norte stations in the East Bay after a fire on the trackway.

Transit officials had initially tweeted about developing delays due to an obstruction on the tracks shortly before 2:30 p.m.

Shortly afterwards, service was halted due to the fire. Officials said the fire on the trackway was closer to the El Cerrito Del Norte station.

BART officials wrote on Twitter at 2:38 p.m. about the service disruption and did not indicate when regular service will resume.

BART announced that service was restored at 3:24 p.m.

AC Transit provided mutual aid with the #72 bus line. The Berkeley Fire Department assisted with the incident.

There were some concerns that the increased number of BART riders who used the system Wednesday morning after a fatal crash snarled the Bay Bridge could slow service out of San Francisco for the evening commute. As of 5 p.m., the crowds in the downtown San Francisco BART stations were not unusually large.
