Fire Hydrant Break Sends Geyser Shooting 60 Feet High, Wasting Huge Amounts Of Water During Drought
OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- A broken fire hydrant near southbound Interstate 880 and 66th Avenue in Oakland sent a geyser of water approximately 60 feet high.
At 2:18 pm., a tow truck hit the hydrant at 5601 Oakport St. across the street from O.co Coliseum, knocking it off its pipe and unleashing the torrent of water.
The fire hydrant was located at East Bay Municipal Utility District's Oakport facility.
Fire crews were soaked through trying to turn the valve to shut off the flow, while precious water poured out onto the asphalt.
The water was turned off just after 3:00 p.m.
No injuries were reported.
