Fire Danger High As Vacationers Travel To Lake Tahoe For The Holiday Weekend
KPIX 5 Morning Weather Anchor Roberta Gonzales answers the questions you never get to ask on-air.
Q: Hey Roberta; I am heading to Tahoe for the Holiday. What's the forecast. - Ron Lyons; Alamo
A: Dry and breezy/windy conditions expected Friday. In fact, so dry that a Red Flag Warning is in effect for the Greater Lake Tahoe area from 2PM to 9 PM. In addition, a Lake Wind Advisory has been issued from 11AM to 9PM.
A strong cold front is sliding across Northeast California and Western Nevada. It will bring gusty winds Friday afternoon and evening and drop humidity levels abruptly with drier air aloft. This means it will be brittle dry, prompting fire danger. Winds ease back Saturday and will be light Sunday and Monday. Expect southwest winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 40 mph this afternoon. Ridge gusts to 60 mph. And there will be areas of blowing dust especially south of I80 in the Eastern Sierra.
