Fire-Damaged Cruise Ship Arrives In San Francisco For Repairs
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5 / AP) ― A cruise ship that caught fire and stranded thousands of passengers for days in November was docked Monday in San Francisco for repairs.
The Carnival Splendor arrived from San Diego to undergo about $56 million in repairs. San Francisco was chosen because it has the only dry dock large enough for a ship of the Splendor's size.
Port of San Francisco Maritime Director Peter Daily said the repairs would create hundreds of jobs for pipe fitters, welders and electricians over the next month.
Carnival Cruise Lines said the ship was still on schedule to accept passengers for a trip by Feb. 20.
The Splendor was towed to San Diego after a Nov. 8 engine room fire cut the vessel's power. About 4,000 passengers were stranded off Mexico's Baja California coast.
