Fire Crews Battle Grass Fire Near Sebastopol
SEBASTOPOL (CBS SF) -- Fire crews in the North Bay knocked down a grass fire Tuesday afternoon east of Sebastopol, on an island owned by the city of Santa Rosa.
Dispatch first received reports of the fire around 4:02 p.m. Tuesday. The blaze started south of Highway 12 on the Joe Rodota Trail and its smoke could be seen from far away. It was contained shortly after 5 p.m. More than 3 acres were burned.
Fire crews remained on the scene mopping up hot spots for several hours.
After the fire was first reported, the Santa Rosa Fire Department called on the Sebastopol Fire Department and Gold Ridge Fire units to assist.
The fire was burning in a wooded area near the Laguna de Santa Rosa on the south side of Highway 12 and east of the town of Sebastopol. When crews first arrived on scene, there was difficulty accessing the blaze.
Working crews called for assistance and the fire kept growing. By 4:30, they had requested three more fire engines.
UPDATE: crews reported that the fire grew to 3 acres but no structures were in danger. Smoke from the fire hung over Santa Rosa and Sebastopol.
There were no reports of injuries, but authorities believe the fire was "human-caused." The blaze is under investigation.
