Antioch Apartment Complex Fire Leaves 29 People Without Homes
ANTICOH (CBS SF) -- A three-alarm fire that ripped through an apartment complex in Antioch Wednesday morning displaced 29 residents, an official with the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District said.
Fire Inspector Steve Aubert estimated the damage at around $950,000.
The fire, which was reported at 8:15 a.m., burned 12 apartments at the Delta Pines Apartments complex, located at 2301 Sycamore Drive, rendering them completely uninhabitable, Aubert said.
Antioch police helped to evacuate residents before firefighters arrived and Aubert said initially that residents from 32 apartments had to be evacuated.
The blaze broke out on an exterior balcony of a 16-unit apartment building, burning the balcony before continuing to spread throughout the building.
The fire then spread into the attic space of an adjacent four-unit building, Aubert said.
It took firefighters roughly an hour and a half to douse the blaze, Aubert said.
Initially, officials said 20 apartments had been damaged in the fire, but as of around 5 p.m., Aubert said inspectors were able to determine that eight of those 20 could be inhabited.
No cause for the fire has been identified and Aubert said no injuries were reported.
The American Red Cross assisted in finding emergency shelter for the displaced residents, Aubert said.
