Final 6 Chosen To Help Draw California District Maps
SACRAMENTO (AP) -- The last six members have been chosen for an independent redistricting commission that is at the heart of one of California's biggest political-reform efforts in decades.
Eight initial members of the California Citizens Redistricting Commission were picked at random last month. They voted for the final members of the commission on Wednesday.
The last six include, by law, two Democrats, two Republicans and two from neither major party.
The 14 member-commission is charged with drawing new state legislative and congressional districts by Aug. 15, in time for the 2012 elections.
Voters removed the responsibility for drawing legislative boundaries from the state Legislature by passing a 2008 ballot initiative. This year they expanded the commission's scope to include congressional districts.
