Fate Of Suspended SF Sheriff Mirkarimi In Supervisors' Hands
SAN FRANCISO (KCBS) — The clock is now officially ticking for the San Francisco Board of Supervisors to decide the fate of suspended Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi.
On Tuesday, the entire record of Mirkarimi's Ethics Commission Hearing was handed over to the board. Supervisors have 30 days to decide whether Mirkarimi should be reinstated or permanently removed from his position.
The supervisors have scheduled an October 9th hearing to make that decision. Before that, the board has plenty to read.
Executive Director John St. Croix of the Ethics Commission said each supervisor received four binders, each averaging about 4,000 pages. The binders contain the details of the commission's nearly six-month inquiry.
"Every single time any material in this was produced it was immediately posted to our website," he said.
St. Croix added that much of the reading material has been available to both the public and the supervisors for months.
The Ethics Commission has entered a non-binding determination that Mirkarimi committed official misconduct when he grabbed his wife's arm during an argument on New Year's Eve and later pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor of false imprisonment.
Mirkarimi strongly disagrees with that finding and his wife Eliana Lopez has consistently denied that he abused her.
Nine of the 11 San Francisco supervisors would have to agree in order for Mirkarimi to be removed from office.
