Fate Of Pacifica Golf Course Uncertain
PACIFICA (KCBS) – There's new legislation at the San Francisco Board of Supervisors to shut down Sharp Park Golf course in Pacifica, so that the land could be used for hiking and outdoor recreation.
Environmentalists have been trying to close the popular golf course for years to preserve the endangered red legged frog and San Francisco garter snake.
Lawsuits are underway, and now Supervisor John Avalos has introduced an ordinance that directs the Rec and Park Department to turn their management of the park over to the National Park Service.
"It's very fitting that we can find a form of recreation there that can be broader than the current golf needs," said Avalos.

The land would be returned to its natural state to protective sensitive species and their habitats. Golfer Richard Harris is leading the fight to save Sharp Park.
"I've played there for 50 years," said Harris. "Many who play here are long-time players and are mostly seniors, mostly racial minorities, and a substantial number of women, a lot of juniors and high school teams."
The Avalos legislation says Sharp Park should be used for "modern recreational" needs, including hiking, walking and biking.
