Fatal Traffic Accidents On The Rise In South Santa Clara County
SAN JOSE (KCBS) – A man driving a motor home in South Santa Clara County has become the eleventh traffic fatality in the area within the past two weeks. A 66-year-old man from San Louis Obispo was headed south 101 in Gilroy when he hit a metal guardrail on the side of the road and then swerved into a Toyota Corolla.
CHP Sergeant Matthew Lindholm said that the driver of the RV likely suffered some kind of health problem, which he said happens far more often than you might think.
"Very frequently, in fact, we have people suffer catastrophic health issues behind the wheel, and then they end up in very serious collisions," said Lindholm.
KCBS' Matt Bigler Reports:
Lindholm said that weather also may have been a factor in many of the recent crashes.
"You get in a hurry with all of the other holiday travelers," said Lindholm. "Then you couple that with inclement weather and accidents are ready to happen. So you need to be aware of the weather and most of all wear your seatbelt."
The driver of the RV was not wearing his seatbelt.
