UPDATE: Hit-And-Run Suspect Dies After Jumping Off Highway Overpass In Concord
CONCORD (CBS SF) -- A hit-and-run suspect died after jumping off a highway overpass in Concord following a chase involving sheriff's deputies Wednesday night, authorities said Thursday.
The Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office said in a press release that deputies had responded to a report of hit-and-run collision in Bay Point Wednesday at around 8:31 p.m. A deputy noticed a white Toyota Prius driving erratically and believed it might have been involved in the collision.
When the deputy attempted a traffic stop in the area of Willow Pass Road and Weldon St., the Prius instead took off at a high rate of speed, the sheriff's office said.
Deputies were led on a chase along westbound Highway 4, Highway 242 and surface streets in Concord. The Prius hit the guardrail at the ramp from Highway 242 to westbound Highway 4 and then fled on foot. The sheriff's office said after running along the overpass from 242 to westbound 4, the suspect jumped off the overpass onto Arnold Industrial Way, a 40- to 50-foot drop.
Deputies found the suspect on the ground and immediately performed CPR on him with the assistance of Concord PD, the sheriff's office said. An ambulance and the fire department responded to the scene to continue life-saving measures.
The suspect was later pronounced deceased at the scene. He was identified as 31-year-old Kentreal Irving of Concord.
Per the countywide law enforcement-involved fatal incident protocol, the incident was being investigated by the sheriff's office, the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office, and the California Highway Patrol.
