1 Killed, 10 Party Bus Passengers Hurt In Chain Reaction Crash On Highway 101
REDWOOD CITY (CBS/AP/BCN) -- A 36-year-old woman is dead, her husband hospitalized in critical condition and nine other people were hospitalized after a crash early Sunday on Highway 101 in Burlingame involving a car driven by a man police say had been drinking and a party bus.
In the 2 a.m. crash, California Highway Patrol Officer Art Montiel says a Honda coupe driven by a 43-year-old Raul Padilla appears to have slammed into the center divider of Highway 101, then came to a stop facing oncoming traffic.
Montiel says after the Honda stopped, the front end of a party bus, with 18 people on board, hit the disabled car.
The driver of the car -- identified as Raul Padilla -- was hospitalized in critical condition and his wife was killed, CHP Officer Kyle Foster said.
Foster said both drinking and driving and the lack of seat-belt use were factors.
Padilla's wife's name has not been released by the authorities, but according to the San Francisco Chronicle, the woman killed was 36-year-old Sarah Klein—and internationally known burlesque performer and journalist also known as Sparkly Devil.
Other party bus passengers suffered minor to moderate injuries.
A Sig-alert was issued at 2:19 a.m. when the CHP closed all southbound lanes of Highway 101, Evans said.
At 5:10 a.m., the roadway was cleared and the Sig-alert was lifted, he said.
During the road closure, traffic was diverted off the highway at the Broadway off-ramp, Evans said.
