Driver Arrested On Suspicion Of DUI In Highway 4 Fatal Crash
BRENTWOOD (CBS SF) -- A driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI Monday night after a fatal head-on crash that closed Highway 4 in Brentwood in both directions, according to authorities.
At about 4:30 p.m., reports came in of a crash on the eastbound lanes in the city of Brentwood near Marsh Creek Road.
CHP, police and East Contra Costa Fire responded to the scene.
Upon the arrival of emergency personnel and CHP officers, it was determined that a 2018 Honda SUV was driven across the solid double yellow lines, into oncoming traffic, and collided head on into a 2013 Toyota Corolla.
The solo male driver of the Toyota, a 51-year-old man from Ripon, was pronounced dead at the scene.
In the initial investigation, it appeared that the solo male driver of the Honda was traveling on westbound on the highway and veered to the left and across the solid double yellow lines and directly head on into the Toyota traveling in the eastbound lane.
The driver of the Honda, a 46-year-old Concord man, was not injured and investigated for driving under the influence of alcohol. After a field test, he was subsequently arrested for suspicion of felony DUI.
Debris from crash scattered all over Highway 4. The highway was shut down in both directions, with traffic being diverted off at Balfour Road.
A Sig-alert was issued for traffic in both directions around 4:50 p.m. Authorities said Highway 4 was reopened in both directions shortly before 6:30 p.m.
