Weather, Wrecks, Transit Problems Make Mess Of Commute
OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- All lanes of westbound state Highway 24 in Oakland have reopened after a fatal crash blocked the roadway for more than an hour during Friday's morning commute, according to the California Highway Patrol. It was just one of several delays for people hitting the roads.
CHP officers responded to westbound Highway 24 near the 51st Street on-ramp, just east of Interstate Highway 580, at about 4:45 a.m., the CHP said. At least one person was killed in a crash, the CHP said. Further details about the crash were not immediately available. A Sig-alert was issued at 5:16 a.m. when the CHP blocked all westbound Highway 24 lanes. It was cancelled at 6:15 a.m.
Our traffic maps also found flooding on north I-280 entering San Francisco as well as heavy traffic surrounding each side of the San Mateo Bridge and on the I-80 approach to the Bay Bridge out of the East Bay.
At the same time, a problem in the Transbay Tube slowed the ride between Oakland and San Francisco.
Caltrain also reported delays of up to 30 minutes after a train broke down south of Redwood City. Southbound Caltrain No. 208 broke down, causing trains to single-track through the area, Caltrain spokeswoman Christine Dunn said at about 7:55 a.m.
South Bay firefighters also battled some flash-flood conditions on city streets.
A flood advisory had been issued for most of the region through 10 a.m.
