Southbound Lanes Of I-880 In San Leandro Reopen After Fatal Accident
SAN LEANDRO (CBS SF) -- A woman who was a passenger in a car that was speeding and making unsafe lane changes was killed when it collided with a big-rig on southbound Interstate Highway 880 on Tuesday morning, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said.
The crash was reported at about 10:55 a.m. on southbound Highway 880 in the area of Floresta Boulevard. CHP Officer Manuel Leal said the woman, who hasn't yet been identified, was a passenger in a 2000 Honda Accord being driven by a 20-year-old Oakland man.
Leal said witnesses told officers that the Oakland man was making several unsafe lane changes in the No. 1 and No. 2 lanes at a high rate of speed and for some reason he lost control and crossed from the No. 1 lane to the No. 5 lane, where the Honda collided with the big rig.
He said the collision caused the Honda's right front passenger door to be torn off and the woman was ejected. He said Alameda County firefighters responded and attempted to provide medical aid to the woman but she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 20-year-old driver of the Honda was transported to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley to be treated for a complaint of pain while the big-rig driver didn't suffer any injuries, according to Leal.
The three right southbound lanes of Highway 880 were closed for about three hours but reopened at about 2:20 p.m., Leal said.
The CHP is actively investigating the fatal collision, but no arrests have been made so far, according to Leal. The CHP said anyone with information about the crash should call the CHP Hayward office at (510) 489-1500.
