Family Member Is Suspect In Rape Of 80-Year-Old Richmond Woman
RICHMOND (CBS/BCN) -- An 80-year-old woman was raped by a family member in Richmond late Thursday night, and the man suspected of the crime is not yet in custody, a police spokeswoman said Saturday.
The sexual assault is believed to have occurred late Thursday at the woman's home, but it was not reported to police until around 8 a.m. Friday, Richmond police Sgt. Bisa French said.
The suspect is a relative by marriage, French said.
The woman had activated a Life Alert emergency notification transponder Thursday night, but when police responded to the notification, she "didn't tell us what happened at that time," French said.
But the woman called back Friday morning and said the suspect had assaulted her, French said.
The suspect was not yet in custody as of 12:30 p.m. but French said an arrest is imminent.
"We do know where the suspect is," she said. "He's not in custody but we expect him to be taken in later Saturday."
The victim was taken to a local hospital where she was released Friday evening, French said.
