Fairfield Police Shoot, Kill Suspect After Chase, Shootout
FAIRFIELD (CBS SF) -- Fairfield police officers shot and killed a man in Suisun City on Friday night in the second fatal officer-involved shooting in Solano County in less than two days, according to the Solano County Sheriff's Office.
Around 9 p.m. Friday, two Fairfield police officers on patrol near East Tabor Avenue and Grande Circle attempted to stop a black Hummer for a traffic violation, according to sheriff's officials.
According to the sheriff's office, the driver of the Hummer drove away from the officers, sparking a chase that continued into Suisun City.
The pursuit ended near the intersection of Bella Vista Drive and Walters Road when the suspect drove off of the roadway and into a field and became stuck in an embankment, sheriff's officials said.
As the officers approached the Hummer, the driver stepped out of the car but quickly ducked back inside and grabbed a gun, according to the sheriff's office.
Sheriff's officials say the suspect fired several shots at the officers, who responded by shooting back, striking the suspect several times.
The suspect was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead from his injuries.
Sheriff's officials said the suspect has been tentatively identified as a Suisun City resident and has an extensive criminal history, including multiple arrests for armed robberies in other states.
His name has not been released.
The sheriff's office is teaming with the Solano County District Attorney's Office to investigate the shooting, which occurred in the sheriff's office's jurisdiction just outside Suisun City limits.
Neither of the officers was injured by the gunfire, and both are being placed on paid administrative leave following standard procedure in an officer-involved shooting.
The deadly shooting came little more than a day after officers shot and killed 24-year-old Fairfield man Kendall Walker in Vacaville.
Walker was shot three times and died at the scene around 7:30 p.m. Thursday after walking toward officers in "an aggressive and threatening manner" with a knife and another object believed to be a crowbar or hammer, according to Vacaville police.
On the afternoon of June 28, Vacaville police officers shot and killed 21-year-old Lonnie Taylor of Sacramento after he allegedly tried to run officers over on Interstate Highway 80.
Police said he was suspected of stealing television sets from a WalMart.
