Facebook Puts Together Global Policy Team
PALO ALTO (KCBS) --- Facebook is launching its own version of a foreign service department.
Officials at the Palo Alto- based social networking giant said they need a few good diplomats to represent the company abroad, so they are putting together a new global policy team to both represent the company to foreign governments and to report back about the privacy rules and regulations in other countries.
Facebook is hiring policy directors for the Middle East, Spain, Germany and Italy, among other countries.
KCBS' Matt Bigler Reports:
KCBS technoglogy analyst Larry Magid said Facebook is trying to thrive internationally and have good relationships in other countries. He said Google did something similar in 2006.
"Whether it's Google or Facebook, they're going to come up against free speech issues, they're going to come up against tax issues," he said. "They're going to need to operate in a way that opens doors."
Facebook has more than 600 million members, which is larger than the population of most countries. Seventy percent of those members live outside the U.S.
