Facebook Founder Donating $100M To NJ Schools
TRENTON, N.J. (CBS/AP) - Schools in New Jersey's largest city are poised to receive $100 million from the founder of Palo Alto-based Facebook.
Democratic Newark Mayor Cory Booker, Republican Gov. Chris Christie and Facebook's founder Mark Zuckerberg were expected to announce the donation Friday on Oprah Winfrey's Chicago-based TV show. An official in Christie's administration, speaking on condition of anonymity because the announcement is to be made Friday, confirmed the plans to The Associated Press.
Under the arrangement, Booker would take some control over the troubled school system, which is run by the state and has some of its lowest test scores and poorest graduation rates in New Jersey.
Booker and Christie support changes that are opposed by teacher unions, including charter schools and teacher evaluations.
