Ex-Dolphins QB Pat White Works Out With 49ers; Giants Next
SANTA CLARA (CBS Sports) -- Former Miami Dolphins and West Virginia University quarterback Pat White, who hasn't played in the NFL since 2009, reportedly worked out with the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday.
But the fact the quarterback got out of town and has now set up a visit with the New York Giants doesn't bode well for White's chances in San Francisco.
White threw passes with San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh during the workout at the 49ers' Santa Clara practice facilities, according to Comcast SportsNet Bay Area.
Thursday's workout marks at least the second time this month that the 49ers have seen White in action. San Francisco also saw White throw passes at West Virginia's pro day March 14.
White's pro day workout eventually led to a phone conversation with Harbaugh and during that conversation earlier this month, the 49ers' third-year coach invited White to the 49ers' facilities for a closer workout.
The 27-year-old has only one season in the NFL and has never completed a pass in the league. White was a second-round draft pick of the Dolphins in 2009 and was with the team until being released in September 2010. During his only season with the Dolphins, White was 0 for 5 as a quarterback, but did rush for 81 yards.
With Alex Smith in Kansas City, Harbaugh said at the league meetings that the 49ers would be looking for a quarterback to push starter Colin Kaepernick. "We want competition at every position and the quarterback position is no sacred cow position," Harbaugh said.
If signed by San Francisco, White could be a good fit in offensive coordinator Greg Roman's system, one that includes a steady dose of the read-option and pistol.
With his size and weight, White (6-foot, 190 pounds) would also come in handy as a scout-team quarterback to help the 49ers' defense prepare for other read-option quarterbacks like Seattle's Russell Wilson (5-11, 206).
