Elderly Woman Shot Dead While Driving In East Oakland
OAKLAND (CBS SF) - An elderly woman was shot and killed while driving through East Oakland Wednesday afternoon, a police officer said.
The shooting was reported around 1:25 p.m. in the 2400 block of Fern Street in Oakland's Fairfax neighborhood.
Neighbors told KPIX 5 that 66-year-old Judy Salamon died in the shooting, which took place less than a mile from where she lived for more than 20 years.
"The police came by and they said that our next door neighbor was shot in the head," said Brian Wong, Salamon's neighbor.
"We're all just stunned and shocked and saddened," said Joel Denney, a friend of Salamon.
Neighbors said Salamon was an animal lover, a pet sitter who often took care of multiple dogs. "She loves her dogs and I don't think she would be a target," Wong said.
According to police, the suspects fired directly into the woman's car. Her car then rolled backward and crashed into a second car. Neighbors said they heard three gunshots and found Salamon in her car.
Officers arriving at the scene were unable to locate any suspects, and no arrests had been made in the case, Officer J. Moore said.
"It's too early in the investigation to tell what led up to the shooting," Officer Johnna Watson told KPIX 5.
Wednesday's shooting was Oakland's 56th homicide of 2013.
