Freeway Shooting Shuts Down Eastbound I-580 In Oakland
OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- A freeway shooting in Oakland closed a stretch of eastbound I-580 in Oakland's Dimond neighborhood for almost two hours Wednesday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol.
According to Oakland police, at approximately 3:17 p.m., officers responded to a report of a shooting in the area of Fruitvale Avenue and the I-580 freeway off ramp. Police found an adult male and female suffering from gunshot wounds at the scene.
Paramedics responded to the scene to provide medical attention. Both victims were transported to an area hospital and were listed in stable condition.
The CHP reported just after 3:30 p.m. that the Fruitvale Avenue off-ramp from eastbound Interstate Highway 580 was closed for the shooting investigation. Authorities announced via Twitter that a stretch of the freeway was also closed about 20 minutes later.
Video shot by Chopper 5 showed officers inspecting a white sedan with all four doors open that was stopped near the I-580 overpass. Oakland police and CHP officers were walking on the freeway looking for evidence connected to the shooting.
A massive traffic jam stretching back from the site of the closure was growing at the beginning of rush hour. Traffic was also heavy on side streets in the area.
The 14th Avenue on ramp and Fruitvale Avenue off ramp were also closed.
All eastbound lanes were reopened by authorities at about 5:18 p.m. The closure lasted one hour and 56 minutes.
The Oakland Police Department is the lead agency on the shooting investigation.
