East Bay Freeway Interchange Project Nears Completion
HAYWARD (KCBS) - It's been five years in the making, but the remodeling of a troublesome East Bay freeway interchange is expected to be finished in a matter of months. That means frustrated commuters who have long been dealing with crowded lanes and big backups may finally see some relief on the roadway this summer.
The 92/880 interchange is often described as a stretch of roadway with darting traffic and tight cloverleaf on and off-ramps, and most transit experts agree it was not designed to handle the number of cars it carries nowadays.
KCBS' Bob Melrose Reports:
For several years now, workers have been rebuilding it, with much of the construction and associated road closures taking place at night - which helps to lessen the impact to motorists but has slowed progress.
But now, at long last, the $160 million project has been declared overwhelmingly complete.
One of the remaining tasks - landscaping the remodeled area.
