Earthquakes' Wondolowski Named To U.S. National Team
SAN JOSE (CBS SF) – San Jose Earthquakes forward Chris Wondolowski has been named to the United States roster for the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup. The team will begin gathering July 1 in San Diego, and will host Guatemala on July 5 in the only tune-up match prior to the start of the tournament.
Wondolowski has 11 career caps for his country, the last coming on Jan. 29, 2013 against Canada. He was a part of the U.S. team for the 2011 Gold Cup, appearing in three matches as the U.S. team reached the final of that tournament.
The U.S. Men's National Team was drawn into Group C of the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup along with Belize, Cuba and Costa Rica. The U.S. will open group play against Belize on July 9 in Portland, Ore., before traveling to Sandy, Utah, to face Cuba at Rio Tinto Stadium on July 13 in their second group match. The United States finishes the group in East Hartford, Conn., against Costa Rica on July 16.
In 2013, Wondolowski leads the Earthquakes with five goals and three assists. Last season, he was named Major League Soccer MVP after tying the all-time league record for goals scored with 27. He led San Jose to the Supporters' Shield with 66 points and a 19-6-9 record. He is now the Earthquakes all-time leading scorer with 69 goals.
