Earthquakes Lose In 3-0 Shutout To Fire
SANTA CLARA (AP) -- Freddie Ljungberg scored his first goal with Chicago and added two assists to help the Fire beat the San Jose Earthquakes 3-0 Wednesday night.
Rookie defender Steven Kinney scored his first MLS goal, and Patrick Nyarko added another score in second-half injury time.
Kinney headed home a neatly curled corner from Ljungberg in the 40th minute to end Chicago's franchise-record scoreless streak at 401 minutes. The stretch dated to Sept. 4 and topped the previous mark of 395 minutes set last season.
San Jose goalkeeper Jon Busch, playing for the first time against the team that unceremoniously dumped him just before the season opener, got his right hand to Kinney's shot but couldn't stop it.
Ljungberg added an insurance goal in the 72nd minute.
The loss broke San Jose's streak of four consecutive home
shutouts, three of which had been wins. It also dropped San Jose to seventh in the overall MLS standings, behind Colorado, which beat Philadelphia 4-1 Wednesday.
