Earthquakes' Lenhart Named MLS Player of the Week
SAN JOSE (CBS SF) – San Jose Earthquakes forward Steven Lenhart has been named Major League Soccer's Player of the Week after scoring twice in the club's 2-1 road win against Real Salt Lake on Saturday.
The target man had a pair of headers to help keep the Earthquakes (11-11-8, 41 pts.) in the MLS Cup Playoff race. His first came in the 18th minute thanks to service from Cordell Cato. After Real Salt Lake equalized one minute later, Lenhart doubled his haul in the 21st minute by heading home the game winner on a Shea Salinas free kick.
Lenhart has now won MLS Player of the Week three times in his career. He took home Week 8 honors in 2012 thanks to his brace off the bench to lead San Jose to a 2-1 win at Philadelphia and received recognition in June of 2011 thanks to a hat trick in a 4-2 win at D.C. United.
The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of soccer journalists.
