Dumbarton Bridge To Be Closed Again Over Labor Day Weekend
MENLO PARK (KCBS) – Following a shutdown earlier this year, the Dumbarton Bridge will be closed again this upcoming Labor Day weekend, so another major element of seismic retrofit work can be done.
During the last closure over Memorial Day weekend, a new seismic joint was installed on the western side of the 1.6 mile span.
According to Caltrans spokesperson Effie Milionis-Verducci, crews will be doing the same work this weekend, but on the eastern side of the bridge.
KCBS' Anna Duckworth Reports:
"Both decks will be cut through in order to pull out the existing seismic joint and replace it with a larger seismic joint that will allow the deck to move a little bit more during a seismic event," she said.
Demolition is set to start as soon as the bridge closes at 10:00 p.m. on Friday. Reopening is scheduled for 5:00 a.m. on Tuesday, in time for that morning's commute.
Milionis-Verducci said the project still requires the installation of 96 bearings between the deck and the foundations, but that work will be done overnight without closing the span.
"We'll continue to do that through the end of the year and then the project will be complete in early 2013," she said.
Caltrans recommends drivers use Highway 237 or the San Mateo Bridge as alternate routes during the closure.
